Writers of short fiction may now enter the 2020 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. The competition has a thirty-nine year history of literary excellence, and Lorian Hemingway and her small judging panel are dedicated to enthusiastically supporting the efforts and talent of writers of short fiction whose voices have yet to be heard.

Most short stories are only 2,000 to 5,000, but; Microfiction might be less than 500, and; A longer “short” story might be as many as 20,000 (novellas start around 30,000 words). So we started the weekly Reedsy Writing Prompts Contest. Here's how our contest works: every Friday, we send out a newsletter containing five story prompts. Each week, the writing ideas center around a different theme. Authors then have one week — until the following Friday — to submit a short story based on one of our prompts.
